Chairman – appointed in 2017

Bertrand Casteres, born in 1978, holds a Master’s degree in applied mathematics, actuarial science and finance and an Executive MBA from HE C (Paris).

Mr Casteres has worked for major insurance companies in Europe. Before joining MUA in January 2012 as head of internal audit, he worked in the internal audit department of Aviva Europe as audit senior manager in the financial management and actuarial audit department, conducting internal audit reviews in actuarial processes across Aviva’s European subsidiaries. He was also involved in the implementation of Solvency II EU Directive within the Aviva Group.

Mr Casteres was appointed CEO Designate of MUA on 1 January 2013 and CEO in January 2015.

Mr Vincent Ah Chuen, born in 1944, is the Managing Director of ABC Group of Companies. He was appointed to the Board of MUA in 1992 and is a member of its Corporate Governance, Nomination and Remuneration Committee. He is the Chairman of MUA Stock Brokers Ltd and a Director of MUA Life Ltd.

Mr Ah Chuen is also a Director of Les Moulins de La Concorde Ltée, of POLICY Ltd, of ABC Motors Co. Ltd, of New Goodwill Investment Ltd and Council  Member of Sir J. Moilin Ah-Chuen Foundation. He is also a director of  MUA Ltd (previously Phoenix Transafrica Holdings Ltd), MUA in East Africa Assurance Co Ltd and two of its subsidiaries.

Mrs Aly has a Master in Business Administration from the Université de Bordeaux IV, France. She is a mergers and acquisitions specialist and has more than 10 years’ experience in corporate valuation issues, deal structuring, raising finance and corporate restructuring. She is also an expert in stock exchange related matters, from IPOs and takeovers to delistings.

Mrs Aly joined Taylor Nelson Sofres as manager in 2000 where she focussed on market research. She then integrated the Knowledge Management & Business Development department of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) where she contributed to leadership publications. She moved within PwC to the Deals Department in 2006, acting as Senior Manager and advising both private and public sector clients on a wide range of assignments, including several companies in the financial services sector.

Mrs. Aly joined MUA in November 2016 as Head of Mergers & Acquisitions

Mr. Maheboob Alibhai, born in 1955 and educated in Vancouver, Canada, has been involved in various acquisitions in Kenya. He has also been involved in numerous businesses namely banking, assembly and distribution of motor vehicles, entertainment, manufacturing of biscuits and plastics, and importation of consumer goods. He was actively involved in the acquisition of the then Phoenix of East Africa Company Limited from Sun Alliance in the U.K. in 1992 and thereafter founded the Phoenix Assurance Group of Companies in Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia and Swaziland as green-field operations. He is also a Director of several other companies in East and Southern Africa which include micro-lending, FMCG trading and real estate development. Mr. Alibhai is a founding member of Young Presidents' Organization (YPO) in Kenya, and a member of Chief Executives' Organization (CEO).

Mr. Azim Virjee, born in 1949, is a Fellow Member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA) of UK and of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants.  He is also a qualified Company Secretary and a Mediator and Arbitrator.  He has extensive experience in accounting, auditing, consulting and finance and has excellent knowledge and experience in company secretarial matters and in corporate governance.  Azim had been in the accounting profession for over 40 years when he retired in 2012. He was a partner in a leading international accounting firm and has been involved in mergers and acquisitions, tax advisory services and financial and management consultancy. 

Mr. Virjee has a long record of community service.  Additionally, he is a director in several manufacturing, trading and property development and owning companies.  He has been appointed to the Board of MUA in December 2011 and is currently the Chairman of its Board Audit Committee.  He has also served as chairman of the Board Investment Committee.

With over 30 years of experience, founder of the firm & Senior Partner Mr. Charles Waweru Gatonye is widely regarded as a “high-class and outstanding lawyer” in his field of commercial litigation. He graduated from the University of Nairobi in 1974 with L.L. B (Honours). He is also an advocate having worked in the office of the Attorney General and rose to become a deputy to the then Director of Public Prosecutions.

He is a member of the Law Society of Kenya, the National Advocates’ Disciplinary Committee, East Africa Law Society, international Commission of Jurists as well as the International Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He is also a Certified Public Secretary. He has had the singular honour to be appointed by His Excellency the President of Kenya as an Assisting Counsel to the just concluded Goldenberg Inquiry investigating the loss of billions of shillings of public funds.

Mr. Gatonye was also appointed by the Central Bank of Kenya as lead counsel to the Commission of Inquiry into the sale and transfer of the Grand Regency, (the Kimunya Commission).

He has a lot of experience in court work and has litigated at the highest levels in our country. Some of the big litigations Mr. Gatonye has handled in the past include Central Bank of Kenya Versus Uhuru Highway Development Authority worth KShs 13.5 billion and Block Hotels Holdings Versus Kamlesh Pattni, again worth billions of shillings. He is currently involved in a number of litigious briefs for the Kenya Revenue Authority relating to unpaid taxes for sums of more than USD 45 million.


Managing Director - Appointed in April 2016

Mr. Musbally, born in 1969, graduated in 1993 with a BSc. (Hons.) from City University, London, in Insurance & Investment. He holds an MBA from Imperial College, London, and is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute (FCII).

He worked as Management Consultant at Kemp Chatteris Deloitte & Touche before joining MUA Life Ltd. in 1997 to manage and develop its health insurance department, a post which he held until 2004, when he was appointed Chief Operations Officer – General Insurance.

Mr Musbally kept the same position after the merger of LPM/MUA activities in 2010, and in January 2012 he took the responsibility of the Underwriting Department of the General Insurance. He was promoted to Head of the General Insurance cluster in January 2014.

In April 2016, Mr. Musbally was appointed Managing Director of MUA in East Africa.
